Chudakarana, also known as Mundan, is a sacred Hindu ritual in which the first hair of a child, usually aged 1–3 years, is shaved off. This ancient ceremony is one of the 16 purification rites (Shodasha Samskara) in Hindu tradition. Shaving the hair symbolizes purification from previous lives, freedom from past bonds, and marks the beginning of a new, pure life for the child in this birth.

Ritual Procedure

1. Sankalp (Vow) – The ceremony begins with a sankalp, where the priest invokes blessings in the name of the child and the family.
2. Chanting of Mantras – The priest recites sacred Vedic mantras, creating a spiritual environment for the ritual.
3. Shaving the Hair – The mother holds the child on her lap, facing west. The priest shaves a portion of the child’s hair while chanting mantras, and then a barber completes the shaving of the remaining hair.
4. Holy Water Wash – The child’s head is gently washed with Gangajaal (holy water from the Ganga).
5. Turmeric and Sandalwood Paste – A paste made of turmeric and sandalwood is applied to the head. This is believed to cool the scalp, prevent infections, and help heal minor cuts or nicks from shaving.
6. Offering the Hair – The shaven hair is either offered to a deity or immersed in the sacred Ganga River as an act of devotion.
7. Ganga Snan (Holy Bath) – The child is given a ritual bath in the holy Ganga or using Ganga water to purify the body.
8. Bagwant Pujan – The ceremony concludes with prayers and offerings, seeking blessings for the child’s health, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

This auspicious ritual not only purifies the child but also strengthens family bonds and connects them to their spiritual and cultural heritage.
